Image Compressor

Make photos and graphics smaller for websites, email and upload forms. Choose a quality level, see the saving for every file, and download the results. Your images are processed on your own device.

Runs in your browser. What you enter here is not sent to our server.

    How to compress an image

    1. Choose up to 20 images, or drag them onto the box.
    2. Set the quality. 70 to 80 is a good balance for photos; go lower for thumbnails.
    3. Optionally enter a maximum width, such as 1920, to scale down very large photos.
    4. Download each result, or use “Download all”.

    Which settings should I use?

Most of the saving comes from two things: lowering quality slightly and reducing pixel dimensions. A phone photo is often 4000 pixels wide, far more than a web page or email needs. Setting a maximum width of 1600 to 1920 pixels usually cuts the file to a fraction of its size before quality is even touched.

WebP normally produces smaller files than JPG at the same visual quality and also supports transparency, which is why PNG files are saved as WebP in Auto mode. Choose JPG if the image must open in older software.

    Questions about the Image Compressor

    Does compressing reduce image quality?

Slightly, because JPG and WebP compression is lossy. At quality 70 to 85 most people cannot see the difference on a screen. If a result looks soft, raise the quality and apply the settings again.

Why did my PNG become a WebP file?

Browsers can only save PNG without loss, which rarely makes the file smaller. WebP keeps transparency and is far smaller, so Auto mode uses it. Pick JPG instead if you need maximum compatibility and do not need transparency.

    Are my images uploaded?

No. The compression runs in your browser using the canvas feature built into it. The files never leave your device.

Why is the result sometimes not smaller?

The file was already heavily compressed. In that case the tool keeps your original rather than giving you a larger file.
