Hash Generator (SHA-256)

Calculate checksums for text or for a file to verify a download or compare two files. Everything is computed locally with your browser’s built-in cryptography.

How to verify a download

  1. Find the checksum published by the software’s official site, usually labelled SHA-256.
  2. Choose the downloaded file under “Or hash a file”.
  3. Compare the SHA-256 value shown here with the published one. They must match exactly.

A match means the file arrived intact and is the same file the publisher described. It does not by itself prove the publisher is trustworthy, so get the checksum from the official source.

Which algorithm?

Use SHA-256 unless you are asked for something else. SHA-1 is included because older checksums still use it, but it is no longer considered secure against deliberate tampering.

Questions about the Hash Generator (SHA-256)

Why is MD5 not offered?

Browsers’ built-in cryptography does not include MD5 because it is broken for security purposes. Use SHA-256 where you have the choice.

Can I reverse a hash to get the original text?

No. Hash functions are one-way. Short or common inputs can sometimes be guessed by trying candidates, which is why passwords need dedicated password-hashing methods rather than plain SHA-256.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The file is read and hashed on your device.
