Password Generator

Generate a random password with the length and character types you choose. Passwords are created in your browser with a cryptographically secure random source and are never sent or stored.

Runs in your browser. What you enter here is not sent to our server.

How to choose good settings

  • Length matters most. Each extra character multiplies the number of possible passwords. Sixteen characters or more is a sensible default.
  • Keep all four character types on unless a site rejects symbols.
  • Use “Skip look-alike characters” for passwords you will have to read aloud or type by hand.

Using the password safely

Use a different password for every account and keep them in a password manager rather than a note or spreadsheet. Turn on two-factor authentication wherever it is offered, starting with your email account, because email is used to reset everything else.

Questions about the Password Generator

Is it safe to generate a password on a website?

This generator runs entirely in your browser using the Web Crypto API, and the password is not transmitted or saved. You can confirm this by loading the page and then disconnecting from the internet: it keeps working.

What does “bits of entropy” mean?

It measures how many guesses an attacker would need. Each additional bit doubles the work. Around 80 bits or more is considered strong for online accounts.

Can you recover a password I generated earlier?

No. Nothing is stored, so save the password in your password manager before leaving the page.
