What is Base64?
Base64 represents any data using 64 plain characters: letters, digits, plus and slash. It exists so that binary data can travel through systems designed for text, such as email, JSON and data URLs. Encoded output is about one third larger than the input.
Base64 is an encoding, not encryption. Anyone can decode it, so never use it to protect passwords or private information.
URL-safe Base64
Standard Base64 uses + and /, which have special meanings in web addresses. The URL-safe variant replaces them with - and _ and drops the trailing = padding. It is used in JSON Web Tokens among other places.
Questions about the Base64 Encoder & Decoder
Why do I get a message about binary data when decoding?
The Base64 decoded correctly but the result is not text, for example an image or a compressed file. This tool shows text results only.
Does it handle emoji and accented characters?
Yes. Text is converted to UTF-8 before encoding, so every character round-trips correctly.
