How to remove duplicate lines

  1. Paste your list, one item per line.
  2. Choose whether upper and lower case should count as the same, and whether to ignore stray spaces.
  3. Optionally pick a sort order.
  4. Select “Remove duplicates”, then copy or download the result.

The first occurrence of each line is kept and later repeats are removed, so the original order is preserved unless you choose to sort. The summary tells you how many duplicates and empty lines were taken out.

Typical uses

  • Cleaning an email or contact list before importing it.
  • Merging keyword lists from several sources.
  • Tidying exported data, log entries or lists of file names.

Questions about the Remove Duplicate Lines

Is there a limit on list size?

There is no fixed limit. Lists of tens of thousands of lines are processed almost instantly on a typical computer.

Does “A to Z” sort numbers correctly?

Yes. The alphabetical sort is number-aware, so “item 2” comes before “item 10”. Use the numeric option for lines that are plain numbers.
