Why do photos appear sideways?

Phones and cameras often store a photo in the sensor’s orientation and add a note saying how it should be turned. Most apps obey that note, but some upload forms, older programs and printers ignore it, so the picture appears on its side. Rotating the image here rewrites the pixels themselves, so it displays correctly everywhere.

Will rotating lower the quality?

PNG files are unchanged apart from the rotation. JPG and WebP files are saved again at high quality; any difference is not visible in normal use.

What is the difference between flipping and rotating?

Rotating turns the picture around its centre. Flipping mirrors it, so text reads backwards and left becomes right.
