What makes a good slug?

  • Short and descriptive. Three to six meaningful words is plenty.
  • Hyphens between words. Search engines treat hyphens as spaces; underscores join words together.
  • Lower case only. Some servers treat upper and lower case as different addresses.
  • Stable. Changing a slug after publishing breaks links unless you add a redirect.

Questions about the URL Slug Generator

Should I remove words like “the” and “and”?

It is optional. Removing them makes slugs shorter; keeping them can read more naturally. Either is fine for search engines.

What happens to accented letters?

They are converted to their plain equivalents, so “café” becomes “cafe”. Characters with no Latin equivalent are dropped.
